Katarzyna Biernacka

After my studies in Computer Science at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HU), I started working as a project assistant and media designer for the BMBF-funded project “Medial preparation and mediation of the national cultural treasure from the ’Hoffmann Collection of Northern Sotho Cultural Heritage’ for the public and professional scholarship in Germany and South Africa”. This position allowed me not only to establish my skills in video, audio and image editing and to gain experience in project management, but also to learn about the professional handling of research data.

From July 2013 to February 2019, I worked at the HU Computer and Media Service (CMS) – first as part of the working group “Media Repository” and since July 2017 as project coordinator in the BMBF project FDMentor. Advising users, organising and conducting workshops and training sessions were among my core tasks here.

From February 2019 till January 2023, I was part of Prof. Pinkwart’s research group at the Chair of “Computer Science Education” at HU. My strong interest in digital tools and the new forms of learning also shaped my research interests. Since June 2016, I have been researching in the field of mobile information and communication technologies in teaching, using Latin America as an example, and I am doing a PhD in the HEADT Centre project at the Institute of Computer Science of the HU in the field of research data publication. In May 2021, I joined the DFKI research group as RDM coordinator and contribute to the LAMASS@DiLea project. Since February 2023, I have been supporting the UniSysCat Cluster of Excellence as a Data Science Officer on all topics related to RDM.

Since the beginning of 2019, I have been the spokesperson for the Sub-Working Group Trainings/Further Education of the DINI/nestor-WG Research Data, in which we strive for the further development and elaboration of different training models and materials as well as collection of already existing training materials. In February 2020, I was appointed co-chair of the IG Education and Training on Handling of Research Data. This group focuses on sharing information about existing developments and initiatives and promoting education/training on the management of research data throughout the data lifecycle. Since March 2021, I have been a member of the steering committee of the DINI/nestor-WG Research Data and thus support both national and international exchange on research data management. I am also a founding member of the Open Science working group of the German Informatics Society.
